Why I won’t buy the Lytro Camera… yet

I’ve been really excited about this new camera made by Lytro until I read this comment from their support team.

The camera technology is fantastic. Snap a photo and focus on your object later. Sounds cool, right? When I saw several demos on CES videos and online presentations, the technology is definitely state of the art. You can create amazing photos with astounding depth-of-field effects depending on where you place your focus with their home computer editing system.

Then the above support article posted this quote:

However, we do not recommend printing posters of any size, nor any other kind of large-format printing.  Keep in mind that the primary purpose of the Lytro Light Field Camera is creating living pictures to be shared online, not printing 2D images.

The files only export to a 1080x1080 pixel resolution (a 12x12 print at most). So while this camera’s first phase will be perfect for consumers, the prosumer to pro won’t get as much out of it as they could.

I’ll wait another year or so for something more advanced.
